Penbay racing circuit gets greenlight for March launch

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Penbay International Circuit, located in Southern Taiwan's Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area, will officially begin operations in March.

The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) yesterday issued a green light for the race tracks, one of the top eight tier-2 international circuits in Asia.

The circuit is one of several BOT (build-operate-transfer) projects launched in the Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area, with its environmental impact assessment report having passed an EPA screening.

But the circuit's operator was fined NT$1.2 million by the EPA for opening the facility before completing waste-water treatment engineering work, and was required to improve the system within a specified period.

The EPA yesterday accepted the improvement work and issued a go-ahead for the circuit

The Penbay International Circuit features five kinds of circuits: International FIA G2 Circuit, which is 3,528 meters long and 12-20 meters wide; National ASN Circuit, 1,960 meters long and 12-20 meters wide; International CIK/FIA Track, 1,200 meters long and 8-12 meters wide; NASCAR Oval Track, 433 meters long and 12 meters wide; and NHRA Drag Strip, 400 meters long and 20 meters wide.

According to the operator, six contests will be held at the circuit this year, including ones featuring sedans and motorcycles.
