CIB snaps Bamboo Union criminal cell

The unit's ringleader was arrested along with six other men yesterday when the Taipei District Prosecutors Office authorized the police to raid the alleged bases of operation in Taipei, New Taipei and Taoyuan County, according to the police.

Incriminating evidence including weapons, narcotics, cellphones, loan records and documents were found at the scene, according to the CIB.

The gang had been involved in numerous counts of violent debt collection in which victims were forced to pay exorbitant interest on loans or face threats and assault in their homes and place of employment, investigators said.

When a victim was unable to meet a scheduled payment, the gang would usually send death threats to kill the victim first, followed by their family.

“Pay up or you will be killed,” was an often-used threat, the CIB said.

The police said they also found that the criminal cell had been aggressively seeking out new recruits to bolster their ranks. These recruits were tasked with selling amphetamine and ketamine to hostesses, hostess bar patrons and other gang members.
