Tax deal with Canada will not affect Taiwanese expats: envoy

The main purpose of the agreement is to encourage mutual investment in both countries and avoid double taxation, Liu Chih-kung, Taiwan's representative to Canada, said during an interview on a Chinese-language radio show in Toronto.

Avoidance of double taxation is part of the groundwork for Taiwan to create favorable conditions to gain entry to regional economic blocs such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) — a proposed free trade group made up of Pacific-Rim countries, he said.

Liu said the deal will not have a negative impact on Taiwanese people in Canada because according to the agreement under discussion, each government will only provide related information on its residents when the other government has “proper cause” to seek such information.
