Envoys to show music, dance talents at banquet

TAIPEI--Foreign ambassadors in Taiwan and their families will sing, dance and play musical instruments to showcase their talents at an upcoming annual banquet organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"This year we hope to connect members of the diplomatic corps and the ministry and present a different scene," Foreign Affairs Minister David Lin told reporters prior to a banquet rehearsal.

"Most importantly, we hope to showcase the cultures of different countries," he added.

Among the envoys to perform at the Spring Banquet in Taipei this year is Levente Szekely, Hungaria's representative to Taiwan, who will perform traditional Hungarian music on the violin, while his wife Hedi Sztano Szekelyne will perform a Hungarian "bottle dance."

Ambassadors of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Nauru and the Solomon Islands will also showcase traditional South Pacific dances, including one of the Pacific haka dances. The ambassador of the Kingdom of Swaziland will also be in attendance.

In addition, the foreign diplomats will sing popular songs, including the Chinese folk song "High Mountain Green" and the Chinese love song "The Moon Represents My Heart."

Jacques Y. Sawadogo, ambassador of Bukina Faso to Taiwan and dean of the foreign diplomatic corps, said it took him three weeks to learn "The Moon Represents My Heart."

"It is my first time in my life to sing in public," said Sawadogo, who has been based in Taiwan for over a decade. "It is not easy, but we try our best to do something."

Taiwanese blind pianist Huang Yu-hsiang, who achieved local fame with his role in the Taiwanese movie "Touch of the Light," will also give a piano recital at the banquet, which will be held Feb. 20 at the Grand Hotel in Taipei.

The banquet, in honor of foreign ambassadors and representatives, will also feature dishes from around the world.
