Former president calls for cooperation among partiesThe China Post news staff TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Former President Lee Teng-hui has posted a video clip on his Facebook page and wished Taiwan a happy new year, adding that the nation will only move forward if political parties worked together.
February 13, 2013, 1:28 am TWN Last year was a year of challenges and the economy remained stagnant, affecting not only society as a whole but the lives of individuals as well, Lee said, adding that although nationwide polls have shown that people are unhappy with present circumstances, the public has remained industrious, exemplifying the bravery and strength of the Taiwanese people. Lee went on to say that the nation is not divided by class and that the people are the masters of the state. Those who are well off should be considerate toward those less fortunate, while leaders should exercise humility and listen to the people, Lee said, adding that although political parties compete with one another, they must also cooperate, because it is through cooperation that the nation may move forward and that the economy may improve. “On Taiwanese soil, our ancestors have borne many hardships, but they never lost their will (to survive),” Lee said, adding that the milestones that Taiwan has reached are the fruits of their labor. “The more difficult our circumstances, the more inclined we are to fight,” Lee said, adding that he is confident, with the unwavering will of the people, Taiwan will see another era of prosperity.
