1 killed, 10 injured in DUI crash on Alishan road

A 57-year-old man was killed, police said. Two of the injured — a 32-year-old man and a 2-year-old toddler — showed no signs of life upon arrival at the hospital, but doctors managed to resuscitate them, police added. They remain in critical conditions.

The accident occurred at about 11:20 a.m. when a black SUV swerved to the opposite lane at high speeds and collided head-on with a minivan on Alishan Road (Provincial Road No. 18), police said.

Witnesses told police that the black SUV was moving fast and unstably. Police later conducted a blood test on its driver, confirming the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

The accident scene is on a relatively straight section of road, and speeding is common there, police said.
