Year-end banquets held for disadvantaged groups

TAIPEI--Social welfare organizations hosted year-end banquets around Taiwan for the disadvantaged Tuesday, bringing together 30,000 people, the Genesis Social Welfare Foundation announced that day.

The year-end banquets were held at 14 locations, with disadvantaged groups such as low-income families, homeless people, seniors living alone and low-income single mothers invited to attend, the foundation said.

In Taipei, the feast was held at the Liberty Plaza in front of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, with 200 tables.

A total of 16 traditional Lunar New Year dishes were served out of thermal boxes, as cooking at the location is not permitted, the foundation said.

In addition to the feast, every participant received a NT$500 (US$16.93) red envelope for good luck.

The organizers had been unsure until last week as to whether it would be possible to give away red envelopes amid the gloomy domestic economy. However, the foundation said that donations from around the country made the banquets and red envelopes possible.

Over 20 companies sponsored the banquets, which were hosted by the Genesis Social Welfare Foundation, the Huashan Social Welfare Foundation and the Jenan Social Welfare Foundation.
