Taiwan out of Davis Cup after 3 first-round losses

TAIPEI--Taiwan suffered its third loss Saturday in the first round of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group tournament, putting it out of contention for advancing to the next level.

Lee Hsin-han and Peng Hsien-yi were defeated by Australia's Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione 6-7 (6-8), 4-6, 2-6 in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan.

A day earlier, Hewitt beat Yang Tsung-hua 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets in the singles, while his compatriot Matthew Ebden defeated Chen Ti 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 at the Yang Ming Tennis Center.

The three losses eliminated Taiwan from the Davis Cup, the premier international team event in men's tennis that is run by the International Tennis Federation and contested annually in a knock-out format.
