Buses to be banned from 223 roads: MOTCThe China Post news staff TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A total of 223 roads around the island have been identified as dangerous and buses will be banned from driving on them, transport officials said yesterday.
February 2, 2013, 12:05 am TWN They are mostly small roads for agricultural use or access to indigenous communities in the mountains, the Directorate General of Highways (DGH) said, adding that buses found entering these roads could be fined NT$9,000 to NT$90,000. The DGH, with the help of local governments, started a survey to identify the island's dangerous roads after a deadly accident where a tourist bus fell off a cliff along a narrow and winding road in the mountains of Hsinchu last year. Twenty-two of the roads identified are at the provincial level, which usually means better conditions. But these roads are included in the bus ban because they are not wide enough, have sharp bends, or are too steep, the DGH said, adding that traffic on these roads are also easily affected by weather conditions.
