Tommy Chen departs for ultramarathon in CanadaCNA TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwanese ultramarathon runner Tommy Chen departed for Canada yesterday to take part in a 700-kilometer race in Canada's freezing Yukon territory early next month.
January 28, 2013, 12:00 am TWN Chen said his goal is to complete the race safely because the average temperature on the route of the Yukon Arctic Ultra is minus 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, which prevents many competitors from finishing the race. The lowest temperature recorded on the trail was minus 62 degrees Celsius, he said. Checkpoints will be set up along the grueling 700-km trail, and runners who fail to reach the checkpoints within a required time will be disqualified, he said. Before his departure from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, Chen said that in addition to packing clothes and medicine, he is also taking red envelopes with lucky charms and spring couplets to give to the other runners in celebration of the Lunar New Year.
