Ang Lee receives London Critics best director gong

Lee, who lives in the United States but who is currently visiting Taiwan, won the honor for his work on the 3D shipwreck epic “Life of Pi.”

He beat Austrian director Michael Haneke to clinch the London awards' best director nod, the Hollywood Reporter said.

Haneke's acclaimed drama on old age “Amour” was a big winner of the annual awards, taking film of the year, best screenplay and best actress.

“Life of Pi,” an adaptation of Canadian novelist Yann Martel's 2002 Man Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name, also won the Sky 3D Award presented by the London film critics group for its technical achievement, the report said.

The London group also honored “Life of Pi” as one of the top 10 films of the year.

“Life of Pi,” more than 80 percent of which was shot in Taiwan, has won both critical acclaim and commercial success.
