Chiayi County home to highest number of senior citizens: Interior Ministry
CNATAIPEI--Chiayi County has the highest ratio of citizens aged 65 or over of any city or county in Taiwan, the Ministry of the Interior said Sunday.

As of the end of 2012, Chiayi County led the country with senior citizens accounting for 16.04 percent of its population, followed by Yunlin County at 15.49 percent, and outlying Penghu County at 14.28 percent, according to statistics compiled by the ministry.
All three counties are now considered aged societies, defined by the World Health Organization as societies in which 14 percent or more of its members aged 65 or older.
Nantou County was approaching “aged” status, with 13.94 percent of its population identified as senior citizens, the statistics showed.
In Taipei City and Yilan, Miaoli, Pingtung and Taitung counties, seniors account for at least 13 percent of the local population.
Among the country's five special municipalities, Taipei is the “most senior” city with 13.04 percent of its residents senior citizens, followed by Tainan, Kaohsiung, Taichung and New Taipei.
Taoyuan County has the lowest percentage of seniors of any administrative district at 8.58 percent.
Overall, there are 2.6 million senior citizens in Taiwan, accounting for 11.15 percent of the total population, up from 10.89 percent in 2011.
