Indigenous languages to get cash boost from MOE

Chiang made the promise after meeting recently with 10 legislators who voiced concerns over the inadequate funds to support indigenous language education.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) earmarked a special fund of more than NT$22.5 million in the past year to assist local governments to design and publish textbooks and teaching materials related to indigenous languages as well as holding teaching interchanges throughout Taiwan.

But Minister Chiang agreed to more than double the total fund to about NT$50 million in 2013 like in some peak years in the past.

In addition to meeting the needs of the routine projects, the increased funds will also be used to help cultivate more qualified teachers and help them earn the specialized certification so that they may expand indigenous language education in coming years.
