Softball a hit in Taiwan, increases outdoor activityThe China Post news staff TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Softball has developed into a leading sport in Taiwan with the increasing teams and players boosting the numbers of those taking part in physical exercises on a regular basis.
January 18, 2013, 12:23 am TWN Ho Cho-fei, chief of the Sport Agency under the Ministry of Education, recently led the winning teams in 23 categories in the just concluded 10th President's Cup softball tournament to call on President Ma Ying-jeou, who has constantly encouraged more people to take up regular exercise. More than 43,000 athletes from 1,457 teams in Taiwan have taken part in the softball tourneys over the years after the Mercuries Group first sponsored formal softball competition. With the encouragement of the government and enterprises, many disadvantaged students and young people addicted to online computer games have turned to softball which is suitable for people of all ages. The aggregate age of senior citizens in a Tainan-based softball team reached more than 1,150 years old.
