Drug smuggler ex-fugitive deported from Japan: police

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Taiwanese fugitive drug smuggler was repatriated back home from Japan Friday, the Investigation Bureau said.

Tsai Yao-hao, 43, had been pursued by Taiwan's law enforcement authorities since January 2005 after he fled from a 15-year prison sentence for smuggling heroin, according to an Investigation Bureau statement.

Tsai was arrested in 2002 on charges of violating the narcotics law. He was brought to trial in the central Taiwan city of Taichung, where he was found guilty, the said.

According to Investigation Bureau officials, Tsai had already planned to flee to Japan before he was convicted. Upon his arrival at Japan's Nagoya Airport in 2004, he was nabbed by airport police for attempting to smuggle amphetamine into Japan, the officials said.
