This is a change from the bureau's usual strategy of naming one spokesperson to serve in the two markets.
Lo, a singer, television host and an actor, is well known in the entertainment industry both in Taiwan and Japan. He speaks Japanese and was rated as the most popular ethnic Chinese entertainer on a billboard list in Japan.
His appointment as a tourism spokesman is expected to draw an increasing number of female Japanese visitors to Taiwan, the bureau said.
He will star in a promotional video and hold functions to meet with fans in Japan, the bureau said.
In addition, the bureau said, it plans to organize events in Taiwan such as food festivals and cycling activities to attract special interest Japanese groups.
