4th-quarter mobile phone shipments decline in 2012

Fourth-quarter shipments of mobile phones from Taiwan totaled 14.64 million units, down 2.5 percent from the previous quarter and 26 percent year-on-year, Digitimes Research said in a recent statement.

The shipment figure included units made by Taiwan's original brand manufacturers, original design manufacturers and joint design manufacturers, but excluded those from electronic manufacturing services, Digitimes Research said.

The global market share of mobile phones shipped from Taiwan also shrank in the last three months of 2012, to 2.8 percent, the research firm said.

It was the second consecutive quarterly drop, after a high of 4.4 percent recorded in the second quarter of the year, the statistics showed.

Luke Lin, an analyst at the institute, said the Q4 fall in shipments was due to the fact that HTC launched its products too late in the quarter.

The Taiwanese smartphone maker did not release its new models until late November, which dragged down not only the company's shipments for the last quarter, but also the country's, he said.
