Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes in Eastern TaiwanCNA TAIPEI--An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck eastern Taiwan at 4:38 a.m. Saturday, the Central Weather Bureau said.
January 6, 2013, 12:01 am TWN The earthquake's epicenter was located at sea about 85.6 kilometers east of Hualien County Hall at a depth of 18.3 km, the bureau said. The strongest tremor, with an intensity of 2, was recorded in Nanao Township in Yilan County. The temblor was the latest in a series of earthquakes that have hit Hualien since Thursday, with the four previous ones recording magnitudes of 4.2, 4.1, 4.5 and 5.1, respectively.
