TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Around 500,000 Chunghwa Telecom Co. users will benefit from a new service that automatically switches users of the telecom's 3rd generation network (3G) to its Wi-Fi network when possible, Chunghwa Telecom announced yesterday.
Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan's largest telecom operator said the new service will launch in mid-January and around 500,000 iOS mobile operating system users will have access to the service.
Chunghwa Telecom said that demand for the 3G and Wi-Fi network has increased gradually in recent years as more and more people use smartphones and mobile devices. This has led to network congestion.
To solve the problem, Chunghwa Telecom said it will launch the EAP-SIM Wi-Fi service, which does not require a user name or password. The telecom provider will make it so users of its 3G network automatically access Chungwha's Wi-Fi service when available.
Chunghwa Telecom said this service will benefit users who are qualified for free Wi-Fi service and have a cellphone or mobile device with an iOS system, including iPads and the iPhone 3Gs, 4, 4S, and 5.
Chunghwa Telecom said it has built over 36,000 Wi-Fi hotspots nationally. Around 10,000 more hotspots will be built this year.
