Number of furloughed employees sees mild riseCNA TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The number of workers furloughed by their employers has risen slightly in the past two weeks, according to statistics released by the Council of Labor Affairs on Wednesday.
January 3, 2013, 12:02 am TWN As of Dec. 31, 4,450 workers from 62 companies had reached agreements with their employers on taking leave without pay, with 4,289 of them presently on furlough, the statistics showed. The number has increased from Dec. 15, when 4,311 workers from 57 companies had agreed to furlough arrangements with their employers, with 4,250 of them on unpaid leave at that time. The council said it will continue to monitor the situation and assist local labor administrations in handling workers' rights issues. Despite the sluggish economy, which has led companies to lay off employees or have them take leave without pay, the number of furloughs still pales in comparison to when the economy hit bottom during the 2008-2009 global financial crisis. In February 2009, 239,000 workers were furloughed.
