China Airlines wins Rose Parade prize for 8th year

TAIPEI--Taiwan's China Airlines won the top prize at the Rose Parade in Los Angeles on Tuesday for the eighth consecutive year with a float promoting Taiwan's cycling culture.

The 55-foot-long, 30-foot-high float called "Cycling Through Paradise" featured the Ci En Pagoda, a landmark in the Sun Moon Lake area that has become one of the country's best-known spots for cycling.

The float was also decorated with tropical flowers and coconut trees and had cyclists wearing aboriginal clothes standing on it to present the natural surroundings and culture ambiance of the famous tourist spot.

The airline said it picked Sun Moon Lake because the lake's cycling trail has been described by CNNGO, CNN's culture and travel website, as one of the most beautiful cycling trails in the world.

Taiwan has been promoting its bicycle scene in recent years in a bid to boost both sports and ecotourism. A biking challenge last November in eastern Taiwan drew about 380 riders from over 20 countries.

Designed in keeping with the parade's theme of "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" the float won CAL's 22nd award in the New Year's Day parade since it began participating in 1987.
