Education Ministry honors outstanding academic workCNA TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Ministry of Education conferred national awards on 19 scholars Friday for their outstanding academic work.
December 29, 2012, 12:05 am TWN Of the 19, eight were awarded the National Professorship, while the others received the Academic Award. Education Minister Chiang Wei-ling noted at the presentation ceremony that such awards usually do not receive as much attention as the entertainment industry's Golden Horse and Golden Bell Awards. The academic journey might be lonely, but the work of outstanding scholars will continue to influence students, he said. The two awards set very high standards and it is very difficult for scholars to receive recognition among their peers, Chiang said. “Academics have despised each other since ancient times,” the minister said, quoting a Chinese idiom. The National Professorship is a three-year position and each awardee receives a grant of NT$3 million (US$103,448) to fund their research, while recipients of the Academic Award are given NT$600,000 each, according to the ministry.
