Traffic accident hospitalization for minors costs NT$22 million

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The medical expenses for teenagers being hospitalized from traffic accidents amount to NT$22 million annually, according to medical experts.

Lin, Chih-Ming (林志銘), the associate professor of the Department of Health Care Information and Management at Ming Chuan University (銘傳大學), and other medical experts announced their findings after analyzing statistics collected from the Bureau of National Health Insurance from 2007 to 2009.

Lin said that there were about 19,000 underage people hospitalized due to traffic accidents between 2007 and 2009, costing around NT$60 million in medical expenses, or about NT$33,000 per person.

"The hospitalization rate of underage people related to traffic accidents in Taiwan is about 106 out of 100,000 people," Lin said. "However, the hospitalization rate of underage people in United States is 73 out of 100,000 people."

According to the research, males' hospitalization related to traffic accidents is twice as high when compared to females.

The research also showed that male teenagers between the ages of 15 and 17 have the highest rate of traffic accident hospitalization.

Lin said "according to previous research, accidents related to motorcycles are the most serious among all traffic accidents happening to teenagers, which could also be the main reason why teenagers aged between 15 and 17 are hospitalized due to traffic accidents."

It would help reduce the expenses of the National Health Insurance program by preventing traffic accidents, Lin said.

The vice superintendent at Shuang Ho Hospital Tsai Shing-han (蔡行瀚) said that parents should think twice before buying motorcycles for their underage children.

Tsai also said that for grown-up children, parents should also teach them about motorcycle safety to help prevent accidents.
