'Justin Lee' tops Google Taiwan's search terms for 2012

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- "Justin Lee," the name of an alleged sex offender, is Taiwan's top trending search term, according to Google's 2012 Zeitgeist, the yearly retrospective that chronicles the most popular and widely used Google search terms.

Google Taiwan said that given the notoriety of the events surrounding Justin Lee the search term for that name took the lead. In second place was the sensational performance of NBA basketball player Jeremy Lin — of "Linsanity fame." In third place is the new catch phrase "tan-ting," which originated from a widely read story first posted on the PTT online forum. Incidentally, this Internet meme spurred the sales of a brand of tea named after the catch phrase.

Leading search terms in other categories include the latest global craze "Gangnam Style," which dethroned Justin Bieber as the most watched video on Youtube. The long awaited sequel to the popular PC game series "Diablo," the popular "Line" instant messaging application and the "Directorate-General of Personnel Administration" — searched by those inquiring about vacation days — each ranked in the top ten.

For mobile searches, the top trending term was "Pregnancy," while "Birth Control" ranked fourth with "Childbirth" sixth. Google said this could be related to the fact that 2012 was the year of the Dragon, an auspicious year where many couples wish to have children. Also, due to the convenience and immediacy of mobile searches, these terms may have been searched by couples just prior to intimacy.

In consumer electronics the top ten terms were dominated by smartphones and tablet computers, signifying the growing importance of mobile devices and the arrival of the age of "Four Screens and a Cloud." Results indicated the most searched brands in Taiwan were HTC and ASUS, highlighting Taiwan's fondness and willingness to support national brands. The top ten searched products of 2012 searched by order of rankings were "iPad 3," "HTC J," "iPhone 4s," "Samsung Galaxy S3," "iPad mini," "Samsung Galaxy Note 2," "HTC One X," "Asus Nexus 7," "Asus PadFone 2," and "iPhone 5."
