Ma lauds student activism amid controversy: source

President Ma Ying-jeou said yesterday that student activism is a catalyst for social progress, according to a Kuomintang (KMT) member.

Amid the recent controversy over a student activist's speech at the Legislature, the KMT member quoted Ma as saying that students should be lauded for their participation in public affairs.

He supports Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng's (王金平) proposal to arrange cross-party negotiations in relation to the Legislative Yuan's Rules of Procedure (議事規則), the party member added.

According to the official, the president stressed that students' concern for society and their participation in public affairs more often than not serve as a catalyst for progress, and that society has improved because of their efforts.

Ma also said that students have the right to express their opinions and the right to fight for their values, the official added.

The president, however, also explained that the Legislature's rules must be followed and that its integrity must be upheld, the party member said, adding that Ma supports Wang's proposal of arranging cross-party negotiations to ensure these things.
