III forecasts e-commerce sector to grow 17.4 percent this year

E-commerce in Taiwan will enjoy a growth of 17.4 percent this year compared to last, according to a survey released by the Institute for Information Industry (III) yesterday.

According to the poll, sales via e-commerce will reach NT$660.5 billion this year, a rise of 17.4 percent from 2011. Of the total, sales from business-to-consumer operations will account for NT$382.5 billion, or 57 percent, while those from consumer-to-consumer operations will account for NT$278 billion.

According to III, e-commerce will enjoy double-digit growth over the next three years and exceed NT$1 trillion by 2015.

"E-commerce has gained in popularity due to an increase in online shoppers and the fact more traditional businesses have included e-commerce into their operations," said Wang Yi-chih, analyst with III. "Meanwhile, government support and an increasingly mature e-commerce environment have also contributed to the sales increase."

Also according to the poll, companies that have no plans to launch e-commerce and companies that have already launched e-commerce are split about 50-50. Among obstacles cited by those that are reluctant to roll out e-commerce are logistics, taxation and concerns over credit card identity theft.

As for firms seeking to expand e-commerce to overseas markets, 85.7 percent cited China as the destination they want to expand to, followed by Hong Kong and Macau.

According to these firms, they choose the Greater China region due to a similarity in language and culture, III said.
