Lamigo Monkeys finish 2nd in Asia baseball series

TAIPEI--Taiwan's professional baseball team Lamigo Monkeys finished second in the 2012 Asia Series in South Korea on Sunday, after losing to Japan's Yomiuri Giants 6-3 in the final.

The Monkeys' starter Paul Phillips yielded four runs in the two innings he pitched, after a walk, 2 two-base hits and a two-run shot, which put the Giants ahead 4-0.

The Monkeys, the champions of Taiwan's Chinese Professional Baseball League, gained one point in the fourth on a solo homer by Lin Chih-sheng.

Giving up no runs from the third to the fifth, the Taiwanese team lost two more points in the next two innings, pitched by Wang Feng-hsin and Keng Po-hsuan. This gave the Giants a 6-1 lead that was difficult to reverse.

In the previous five Asia Series, which pits the winners of top professional baseball leagues in the region against each other, a Taiwan team has reached the finals twice but has never won the championship.
