CIB brings suspect in death of council chief back to Taiwan

A suspect accused of killing a former chairman of the Dayuan Township Council of Northern Taiwan's Taoyuan County was yesterday escorted back to Taiwan from mainland China by officers of the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB, 刑事警察局), according to a CIB press release.

The suspect, Yeh Wen-yuan, 50, and two other accomplices surnamed Chang and Lin allegedly killed You Hsiang-ching, former chairman of the Dayuan Township Council, in the early morning of Sept. 26 and absconded with NT$120,000 in cash and jewelry.

Soon after discovering the crime, the First Investigation Brigade of the CIB set up an ad hoc investigation panel with Taoyuan police officers. The panel learned that Yeh flew to Guangzhou on Oct. 3 with jewelry that he was seeking to dispose of.

Accordingly, the CIB requested assistant from the Public Security Department of Guangdong province to arrest Yeh before he dispose of the jewelry. This request occurred in accordance with the Cross-strait Joint Crime-fighting and Mutual Judicial Assistance Pact signed between both sides of the Taiwan Straits.

CIB said that following analysis of video tapes from surveillance monitors installed around You's residence as well as consideration of possible escape routes, the investigation panel zeroed in on Yeh and his two accomplices

On Oct. 9, Chang was arrested in Taoyuan County. On Oct. 15 Lin was picked up in Tainan City.

The investigation panel found that the three suspects originally planned to rob You's residence so as to steal money and precious items. They killed You after he happened upon them during the robbery.

The panel handed over the three suspects to the Taoyuan District Prosecutors' Office yesterday evening for further prosecution. They have been charged with robbery and murder.
