New immigrants energize, diversify city culture: Taipei mayor

Mayor Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌) yesterday said at a ceremony lauding immigrant families that new immigrants residing in Taipei strengthen the energy and diversity of the city's culture.

At the Chientan Youth Activity Center, Hau said that 44,000 immigrants live in Taipei, roughly one-tenth of the 460,000 around Taiwan, indicating that the capital city is an important destination for immigrants.

He also mentioned that most immigrants — 32,000 — are spouses from mainland China. Other foreign spouses account for 12,000 of the country's immigrants. Hau stated.

"These new immigrants are a great energetic input for the city, where they have enriched the culture and elevate the development of Taipei," he said.

The term "New Taiwanese" is defined as a child who has one foreign parent, and such children now make up one-sixth of the entire birth rate of Taipei, Hau said.

"This is very meaningful to the future development of Taipei," he said. For instance, with the growth of new immigrants coming to Taiwan, Hau stated that the government is obliged to facilitate the immigrants' living, whether by organizing education camps or providing classes.

"Many immigrants have a hard time adapting to the new environment or have a lot of challenges in settling down. Taipei City provides all sorts of resources for any kind of issue," Hau said.

Later, he reminded the audience that immigrants could always call the 1999 Citizen Hotline if they have any questions related to living in Taipei. The Taipei City Government will also strive to provide a more practical and useful information service for immigrants, he promised.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, immigrants in Taiwan have risen to 460,000, making it the third-largest demographic group in Taiwan.
