The China Post news staff--Nickie Wan-Hsin Yue (俞婉馨), a senior student at National Taiwan University, was awarded the Jane Klausman Women in Business Scholarship offered by Zonta International (ZI), ZI District 31 Governor Huey-Er Lee (李惠娥) announced yesterday.
"She was given the award for her outstanding performance in academic studies, social service work and career potential in business," Lee added.
This is also the first time a Taiwan student has won the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship, awarded annually since 1998 to encourage young women undertaking business studies or related subjects who have demonstrated outstanding potential in the field.
A total of 27 young women worldwide applied this year and 12 were selected, with each to receive US$7,000 in scholarship funds.
Yue, a double major in economics and political science, is the only Asian recipient. "I am thrilled, and I am so proud to be the only ethnic Chinese to get the scholarship," she said.
Yue spent a semester studying business management at the University of Pennsylvania as an exchange student last year and interned at the research department of Barclays Investment Bank in Taipei last summer.
She said she planned to work at investment banks after graduation, expected early next year, before taking MBA programs to further improve herself.
Zonta International, with some 32,000 members in 1,200 clubs worldwide, is a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women through service and advocacy. There are 18 clubs with 550 members in Taiwan, or District 31.
