Farmer in Nantou County struck in waist by arrow

The China Post news staff--A farmer in Central Taiwan's Nantou County was recently hit in the waist by an arrow, according to the police. The farmer was spraying pesticide on vegetables on Mountain Pagua (八卦山) when the incident occurred.

Police said the case is one of the most unusual they have ever seen and are still seeking to locate the "criminal" responsible for shooting the 75-centimeter arrow that pierced the farmer's skin.

Investigators believe that the incident might have been the result of somebody unsuccessfully trying to shoot a gray-faced buzzard.

The farmer, 58 and named Hsu Fu-ta, was hit in his left waist by the aluminum alloy arrow when spraying pesticide on his vegetables at 3 p.m. on Oct. 13. His son was with him at the time.

Hsu was soon rushed to a nearby hospital, with the arrow still protruding from his waist. An X-ray taken at the Nantou Hospital showed that the arrow passed along his 11th rib without damaging his pleura or internal organs. The arrow was removed during surgery.

Dr. Chen Ming-chih said that Hsu was quite lucky in the case, because he could have suffered critical injuries if the arrow entered just an inch away.

Hsu was discharged from the hospital after five days of medical treatment.
