Acer founder to inaugurate Chinese consumer research center Tuesday

TAIPEI--Stan Shih, founder of Taiwanese computer maker Acer Inc., will formally inaugurate the "Chinese Consumer Center" in Taiwan on Tuesday as part of his company's strategy to attract innovation power from the country's private sector.

The Oct. 23 press conference is aimed at informing the public about current ongoing developments at the center, which began promoting to local companies in June this year.

The center has been co-founded by Shih and Bernd Schmitt, a professor of International Business at the Columbia Business School in New York, said Stan's Foundation, which is organizing the event.

Shih plans to invite a number of professionals, studying Chinese-language consumer's behavior, to join the center. This is also being done in a bid to attract investments from Taiwan-based international companies in advanced consumer research related to Taiwan and China, the organizer said.

Schmitt has written for several prestigious publications such as The New York Times, the Asian Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times, his official website said.

He is also an executive director at Asian Consumer Insight, a Singapore-based institute that focuses on Asian business and consumers, the website said.

Earlier in August, Shih had urged the government to step up efforts aimed at improving the country's business environment.

He suggested that the government invest more in Taiwan's service and high value-added manufacturing sectors, rather than the capital-intensive semiconductor sector, since the country needed renewed momentum to boost its sluggish exports.

The value of export orders received by Taiwanese companies in September were up 1.9 percent from a year ago to US$37.66 billion, ending six consecutive months of year-on-year declines, government data indicated.
