Number of centenarians grows 26 percent: census

TAIPEI--The number of people over 100 years old this year rose 26 percent from last year, the highest increase in 10 years, the latest government census data showed Saturday.

The number of centenarians tallied this year is 1,876, an annual increase of 387 people, according to statistics from the Ministry of the Interior.

More of the centenarians were woman, the data showed. Female centenarians numbered 1,170 — 1.7 times the number of their male counterparts (706).

Among the centenarians tallied this year, eight of them are supercentenarians, who are aged over 110.

There are three 112-year-old people in Taiwan. They include women in Nantou County and Hualien County, and a man in Taipei City, the ministry said.
