A model of Vizio-branded TVs has topped sales in North America four days after it hit the market, said Wang Wei, chairman of Vizio, yesterday.
The TV is assembled by Taiwan's Hon Hai and made with panels produced at SDP, in which Terry Gou, chairman of Hon Hai, has a stake.
The 60-inch LCD TV, which sells for US$999, has already outperformed Samsung both in sales and reviews, Wang said.
Vizio shipped the first batch of the Vizio E601i-A3 HDTVs to 150 major outlets in North America, only to see sales surge to No. 1 four days after hitting the market, said Wang.
Due to confidentiality agreements reached with clients, Wang declined to elaborate on the sales figures.
He referred to the trade publication Home Theater, which gave the model four-and-a-half stars, leading similar models by a large margin. The highest score is five stars.
According to Wang, sales of the TV are only at their initial stage. The firm is aiming to further boost sales on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, and Cyber Monday, the following Monday.
Black Friday and Cyber Monday will fall on Nov. 23 and 26 this year, respectively. Black Friday is often considered the first day of the Christmas shopping season, with many stores opening extremely early for the day. Cyber Monday is known for a higher than usual rate of online purchasing.
By that time, the TV will be available at over 7,000 retailers in North America, and they will include physical and virtual stores including Wal-Mart and Amazon.com, he said.
