Ex-DPP chief to visit US in Oct. to thank supporters

TAIPEI -- Former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen said Sunday that she will visit major cities in the United States in late October to thank supporters who voted for her in her unsuccessful bid for the presidency in January.

"It is a long-delayed trip," Tsai said while attending a women's film festival that day.

The government has lost its sense of balance in handling foreign affairs by only focusing on China in recent years, Tsai said, adding that it should have a broader vision that encompasses the U.S and Japan, both of which have deep and far-reaching relationships with Taiwan.

After returning from a trip to India last month, Tsai said that in addition to maintaining friendships with Taiwan's traditional partners, the government should make more efforts to establish deeper exchanges with countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Middle East, which are expected to play important global roles in the future.
