Moderate earthquakes jolt Northern, Central Taiwan

TAIPEI--Two earthquakes measuring over 4.0 on the Richter scale hit northern and central Taiwan Saturday, with no immediate reports of casualties or damage reported.

The first was a magnitude-4.1 quake that hit Northern Taiwan at 6:38 a.m., followed by a magnitude-4.3 temblor in central Taiwan at 3:00 p.m., according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The two quakes were not related to each other, the bureau said.

The first quake's epicenter was located 12.5 kilometers south of Taipei City Hall at a depth of 87.2 km.

The strongest intensity of 1 was reported in the Xinyi District of Taipei City and in Xindian District in New Taipei.

The second, which had a shallow epicenter at a depth of 19.1 km beneath the earth's surface, was located 37.2 km east of Nantou County Hall.
