American Grand Riders to embark on a 'dream ride'

The group will set off from Taichung, Central Taiwan and ride southward to Alishan before turning east to Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County and then ride toward Hualien and Yilan in Eastern Taiwan.

Their journey will then wind from Yilan back to Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan, in Northern Taiwan, Starr said.

The trip has been organized to pay tribute to Taiwan's Grand Riders, a group of elderly scooter enthusiasts, who inspired him and other American motorcyclists to ride for their dreams, he added.

The average age of the American Grand Riders is 72 years, Starr said while displaying his helmet that is printed with a quotation in Chinese: “I didn't stop riding because I got old, I got old because I stopped riding.”

Starr, who works as an editor for Motorcyclist Magazine and a producer for Discovery Channel, visited Taiwan last year to interview a group of local elderly motorcyclists, dubbed Grand Riders, who made their names on YouTube after posting a short film documenting their trip around Taiwan.

After watching the film, he decided to meet the venerable riders and ride with them, Starr said.

Moreover, he went on, he hopes other Americans can also feel the spirit of the Taiwanese riders, who he described in an article posted on Motorcyclist Magazine's website as people who “decided to turn their lives around and relive a defining moment of their youth.”
