Fugitive former legislator deported from mainland

TAIPEI--Former Legislator Wang Chih-hsiung (王志雄), who has been on the run in China since 2003 to avoid prosecution for his alleged involvement in embezzling bank funds, arrived in Taiwan Friday under a police escort.

Wang, 60, was arrested in Dalian by Chinese authorities and handed over to Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau.

He was to be escorted to the Taipei District Court immediately after arriving in Taiwan, where the next step in his case will be determined.

Wang, a Kuomintang legislator from 1990-1993 and from 1996-1999, is accused of siphoning money from Chung Hsing Bank when he served as the bank's vice chairman.

He went to China in March 2003 and was officially listed as a fugitive from justice in December 2005 when the Taipei District Court issued an arrest warrant for him.

He is also wanted for his alleged involvement in misappropriating funds and laundering money. Prosecutors in charge of those cases could interrogate him soon.

Wang is the son of former Kaohsiung Mayor Wang Yu-yun (王玉雲), who died in 2009 in Beijing.
