Fishermen, activisits hold talks on sustainable fishing

TAIPEI--Greenpeace environmentalists and Taiwanese fishermen held discussions in Liuqiu Township, Pingtung County on Wednesday on the importance of developing sustainable fishing.

The fishermen said the fast decline of marine resources has made it difficult to survive on fishing, let alone reenergize the fishing culture.

Their catch, mainly tuna, has been shrinking in recent years due to commercial fishing, which uses destructive methods and depletes fish species, the 20-plus fishermen said, during a tour of the Greenpeace ship Esperanza that arrived in Liuqiu island off Taiwan's southwestern coast Tuesday.
