Justice minister to ask for better conditions for Chen

TAIPEI -- Minister of Justice Tseng Yung-fu said yesterday at the Legislative Yuan that he will ask the Taipei Prison to improve conditions for jailed former President Chen Shui-bian when he concludes his current hospital treatment outside the prison.

Tseng said the disgraced former head of state is already receiving better treatment than other inmates, but the Ministry of Justice has asked the prison nonetheless to improve Chen's prison conditions.

"We cannot specify how much will be done for now, but his environment will definitely be improved," Tseng said during an interpellation session at the Legislature.

Tseng made the remarks after ruling Kuomintang Legislator Su Ching-chuan said that since Chen was recently diagnosed with major depression, some people from the opposition camp have expressed concern that the former president should be kept in solitary confinement, away from other inmates, and that the focus should be on treatment for his condition.
