TAIPEI--The season's 21st tropical storm, dubbed Prapiroon, formed at sea 1,010 kilometers west-northwest of Guam on Sunday evening, but is not expected to affect Taiwan over the next five days, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said yesterday.
As of 2 a.m. Monday, Prapiroon was centered at sea some 1,740 km east southeast of Eluanbi on Taiwan's southernmost tip, the bureau said in a statement.
With a radius of 100 km, the storm was moving at a speed of 12 kph in a westerly direction, with maximum sustained winds of 72 kph and gusts of up to 100.8 kph, the bureau said.
CWB officials said they are closely monitoring the storm's movement and will keep the public informed of its possible impact on Taiwan.
Prapiroon means rain god in the Thai language.
