Online gamer sues company over 'unfair' closing of account

The China Post news staff--A veteran player of online games, who once won an Asian championship, has filed a lawsuit against a local commercial agent of an online game developed abroad. The player is demanding the firm return "treasures" and "reward points" that he won in the game over the past seven years, as well as US$50,000 in psychological and reputation damages.

The player claimed that his account was unexpectedly closed, causing him to lose all trophies and reward points won in the game over the past seven years. According to local reports, the gamer used to spend 16 hours a day honing his skills at the game.

The agent of the online game reportedly closed the player's account on grounds of his "abnormal performance."

The Consumer Protection Commission of New Taipei City convened a coordination meeting for both sides to settle the dispute last Thursday. The agent, however, only agreed to unlock the player's account, and said that the accumulated "trophies" and reward points cannot be retrieved.

An official of the commission questioned the fairness of the game. In order to safeguard the interests of online gamers, the New Taipei City Government will hold a seminar to discuss related issues with online game providers and work out a set of fair and reasonable rules for online game playing.
