Lottery winner donates NT$10 mil. to Taipei

TAIPEI--A winner of the government-sponsored Public Welfare Lottery donated NT$10 million (US$341,500) yesterday to the Taipei City government, which said the donation will be used to help more than 18,000 people.

The donor, whose name was not disclosed, won NT$654 million in the July 24 draw with a ticket purchased at a lottery stand affiliated with a tea shop in Taipei, according to Taiwan Lottery Co.

With the NT$10 million donation, the city will be able to buy three rehabilitation buses and aid equipment for physically and mentally challenged citizens and fund educational assistance programs for children from disadvantaged families, Mayor Hau Lung-pin said at a press conference.

Around 18,000 people will be able to enjoy better services thanks to the generous donation, Hau said.

He promised to integrate public and private resources to raise more funds and put forth better social welfare service programs for the disadvantaged.

The lottery winner also donated NT$10 million to New Taipei City and NT$30 million to a social welfare foundation.

Since 2007 when Taiwan Lottery took over the operation, winners have donated a total NT$2 billion, which has benefited more than 1.8 million people from disadvantaged groups, according to Taiwan Lottery statistics valid up to April.

The money made from the lottery is used to support government social welfare and charity programs and help fund the operations of the national pension insurance and national health insurance programs.

As of Oct. 7, Public Welfare Lottery sales for the year had reached NT$85.3 billion, according to Taiwan Lottery president Huang Chih-yi.

Last year, lottery sales reached a record NT$91.2 billion, Huang said.

Taiwan Lottery is a subsidiary of Chinatrust Financial Holding Co., which was designated by the Ministry of Finance to operate the Public Welfare Lottery from 2007 to 2013.
