Tropical depression near Guam may become storm

TAIPEI--A tropical depression formed near Guam could develop into a storm, but chances are low for it to affect Taiwan's Double Tenth National Day on Oct. 10, the Central Weather Bureau said Saturday.

As of early morning Saturday, the depression was near the waters off Guam's northwestern coast, moving in a west-northwesterly direction at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour.

While the depression could develop into a storm over the weekend, it is unlikely that it will become a threat to Taiwan at least until the national holiday, the bureau said.

If the depression becomes a storm, it would be the 21st storm formed since the start of the 2012 Pacific typhoon season.

Meanwhile, lower temperatures and occasional showers are expected across the island next week due to the effects of seasonal winds, the bureau said.

The temperatures could vary a great deal from day to night, ranging from 20 to 32 degrees Celsius, it said.
