LCD panel shipments for China soar during August

TAIPEI--Shipments of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels to China in August rose substantially from July as Chinese TV brands placed orders to meet rising demand ahead of the extended Oct. 1 National Day holiday, a research report said Saturday.

A new subsidy program announced by Chinese authorities for purchases of LCD TVs also served as a catalyst for the shipment growth, the report said.

In its report, market advisory firm DisplaySearch said flat panel shipments to China in August rose 20 percent from a month earlier to 6.14 million units, the highest monthly total in 2012.

The growth rate even beat market expectations by 4 percentage points, DisplaySearch said, as Chinese TV brands actively built flat panel inventories to meet increasing market demand ahead of the National Day holiday.

Chinese authorities have arranged several long holidays a year to give people time to spend. The National Day holiday is one of the long holidays where vendors are expected to see a spike in sales.

Strong demand for flat panels in China also reflects the impact of the latest round of government subsidies supporting the sale of certain newly unveiled eco-friendly LCD TV models, DisplaySearch said.

In early August, China's government launched fresh efforts to promote the sale of efficient appliances by offering subsidies on purchases of 1,554 new TV models sold by 22 brands.

Meanwhile, vendors of other TV models excluded from the subsidy program have also witnessed rising sales after launching aggressive promotions, offering deep discounts to attract buying, DisplaySearch said.
