Cabinet spokesman quits after revealing relationship status

Executive Yuan spokesman Hu Yu-wei (胡幼偉) resigned from his post late yesterday, after posting a controversial Facebook status confirming his relationship with a former student. Hu said that he is preparing the necessary paperwork and that Premier Sean Chen has accepted his informal resignation.

“Although I have not occupied the post for a long time, I have learned so much from President Ma and the premier,” Hu said.

Hu apologized for any actions that have caused disturbance for the Executive Yuan.

“My actions have affected the Cabinet team. I hope this does not produce any negative impressions,” he said.

Another Facebook Brouhaha

Hu yesterday again attracted local media attention with a Facebook posting that explained a recent relationship with a former student.

“Before I leave my post, I would like to clarify a few things this one time and then never mention my private life again,”Hu wrote on his Facebook page.

Hu said he was posting the information out of frustration from receiving countless anonymous threats from those wishing to leak his relationship to local media outlets.

A divorced man for almost 10 years and a professor at National Taiwan Normal University, Hu stated that he had not been in a relationship for years until he met his thesis student Chang Jung-chun (張蓉君). Hu was assigned as Chang's thesis instructor, according to the Facebook post.

They both decided to terminate the student-instructor relationship and begin a new chapter in the relationship, Hu wrote, adding that Chang decided to change her thesis topic and thesis advisor due to moral considerations and academic regulations.

Hu's announcement of resignation came yesterday evening. Hu told media earlier that he had not yet reached the point of resignation, but stressed that he is not someone who grovels to become a government official.

“From day one I have explained to Premier Sean Chen that if the Cabinet has other plans, they don't need to consider me,” Hu said.

On Facebook, Hu wrote the following: “Before I entered the post I made it clear that I was not here to become a politician and that I could resign anytime. My only goal was to support the government in transferring the right information to the public. I, too, wish to perform well in my duties. If my actions do not add points to the Cabinet and have caused disturbance, I would gladly leave the post.”

At the end of the Facebook post, Hu said that he hopes the media can respect his privacy.
