Boat crash victims' families arrive in Vietnam

HANOI, Vietnam -- Family members of the five Taiwanese tourists killed in a boat crash in Vietnam arrived in Ha Long Bay yesterday to deal with post-accident procedures.

The 10 relatives were accompanied by senior members of Taiwan-based Life Tour, the travel agency that organized the boat trip as part of a Vietnam tour for a group of 36 Taiwanese people that included employees from a company in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan.

Assisted by officials from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hanoi and members of the Tzu Chi Foundation based in Vietnam, the group traveled to the hospital directly from the airport to identify the bodies of the victims.

A public memorial service will be held Friday, according to the vice governor of Quang Ninh Province, who was also on site to offer assistance.

Other Vietnamese officials, including the deputy mayors of Ha Long City, visited survivors of the boat crash at the hospital a day earlier to offer their apologies for the accident.

The officials said they will investigate the case and arrest whoever is responsible for the accident as soon as possible to prevent similar cases in the future.

Another group of family members of the deceased passengers is scheduled to arrive in Vietnam later in the day.
