Health Dept. censured for fruit safety inspection slip

TAIPEI--The Control Yuan censured the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday for failing to ensure the safety of sliced fruit sold in Taiwan over the past two years.

A total of 12 cities and counties, or 48 percent of the 25 cities and counties in Taiwan, failed to conduct checks on pre-prepared fruit in 2010, the Control Yuan said.

The following year, 36 percent of the health authorities in cities and counties around the country failed to conduct the checks, with Tainan along with Taoyuan, Pingtung and Taitung counties failing to carry out inspections for two straight years, said Control Yuan member Cheng Jen-hung.

Cheng proposed a censure after noticing that sliced fruit served at the Control Yuan did not show any change in color after two days.

He said that in 2010 the Department of Health began requiring local governments conduct random checks on sliced fruit sold by convenience stores, hypermarkets, supermarkets and street stands.
