Local mobile phone shipments to grow 8.6% in 2013: study

TAIPEI -- Taiwanese mobile phone makers will enjoy higher-than-industry shipment growth in 2013 thanks to new orders of low-end smartphones, a research firm predicted yesterday.

According to a report by Topology Research Institute (TRI), Taiwanese brand vendors and contract makers will ship 94.5 million mobile phones next year, up 8.6 percent from the 87 million units estimated for this year.

Global mobile phone shipments are expected to reach 1.86 billion units in 2013, up 4.5 percent from 1.78 billion units in 2012, the report said.

The higher growth for Taiwanese mobile phone makers will come from increasing orders for low-end smartphones from international brands, such as Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., Nokia Oyj and Lenovo Group, the report said.

Low-end smartphones refer to models priced below US$150, according to TRI.

In its report, TRI also saw shipments of notebook computers and LCD televisions by Taiwanese suppliers rising in 2013 but shipments of digital cameras falling.

Notebook computer shipments from Taiwanese companies will increase by 4.6 percent to 187.9 million units in 2013, higher than the 3.4-percent annual growth forecast for the global notebook industry, TRI predicted.

LCD television shipments from Taiwanese suppliers are expected to total 41.5 million units next year, a rise of 5 percent from 39.5 million units in 2012, the Taipei-based institute said.

Shipments by Taiwanese contract makers of digital cameras, however, will fall by 15.9 percent to 58 million units in 2013, reflecting the companies' transition to higher-end production that will last another year or two, TRI said.
