WASHINGTON--Members of the U.S. Congress had issued 382 letters and statements in recognition of Taiwan's democratic achievements as of Oct. 1, ahead of the Republic of China Oct. 10 National Day, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States said Monday.
In their letters, the U.S congressmen said Taiwan needs to strengthen its military capability and that they will ensure that the U.S. continues to safeguard Taiwan's security based on the Taiwan Relations Act.
In addition, they expressed support for Taiwan's participation in the International Civil Aviation Organization and other U.N. affiliated agencies, the office said.
Some 28 senators and congressmen had released individual statements to praise Taiwan as a role model in democratic development in Asia and an important trade partner for the U.S., the office said.
